A Search For The Healthier Truth

As I continue to study the human body, its processes, and the things that have a significant effect on it, I begin to see that there are a lot of conflicting ideas. My professors preach the old 'Calories In, Calories Out' and 'Diet and Exercise' model. The publishers of diet books are pushing 'Low This, Low That' or 'No This, No That' idea. Quite frankly, I am not so sure about either of these ideas anymore.

The more that I read, the more that I question the conventional wisdom of nutrition. We are taught as students that the way to lose weight is to burn more calories than we consume. While this will work, it may not be the most effective way to handle it. It is this idea that has spawned my plan for find the bigger truth.

My next plan is to gather a list of books to read over the next year or so. Once they are all read (and reviewed here), I will set out to compose a paper based on scientific research and the most common themes. I have a handful of books already selected, and I will list them out at the tail of this post.

Once you look over my list, I would ask you to do me a favor. The titles I have now I was recommended by Dr. Darya Pino, who is the author of Summer Tomato and a contributor for the San Francisco Weekly and The Huffington Post. They are mostly about food and how it affects our bodies. What I want from you, my dear readers, is any suggestion that you think should make it into my research.

You suggestions can be added as a comment here, sent to me via email (see the contact page), or you can post them to Twitter under the hashtag #TruffleRamen. What I am looking for is books, articles, journals, or blog posts that you are important to this type of project. I would also take donations to help pay for the purchase of research materials.

A Day Of Smoked Gouda

Today was Tuesday, which for the time being means that I cooked at least one meal. Today, I cooked two.

Tori and I got up around 9, and I informed her of my hunger. After discussing the possibility of making a trip to the local Waffle House, we decided to look at the weather. As it was raining, we decided that it may have been a better plan to cook our own breakfast. I determined that we had all the ingredients for omlettes, and made my way to the kitchen.

What I wound up making was, in truth, one omelet and one pile of scrambled eggs. Seeing that those dishes are actually very similar, I am going to give you the rough recipe anyway.

2 Eggs, Beaten
1/2 Cup Milk
2 Pieces Turkey Bacon, Fried
6 Oz Smoked Gouda, Shredded
Salt and Pepper, To Taste

Beat together the eggs, salt, and pepper. Pour mixture into preheated skillet over medium heat. When mostly cooked, add crumbled bacon and 5 oz of the gouda. Finish cooking, and fold omelet. Plate and top with remaining gouda.

If you want that as scrambled eggs, then scramble your eggs and follow the same process. Its quite good.

For dinner, I used some prosciutto that we bought a few days ago, a couple of boneless, skinless chicken breasts, and some of the smoked gouda and made a variation on Chicken Cordon Bleu.  I served it with some simple green beans. It was quite delicious. No recipe for that, just look it up on the internet. Its an easy dish.

Truffle Ramen Lives!

Truffle Ramen is going to be my food and recipies blog. Anyone who has followed my blog knows that I have attempted this before, and it never really went anywhere. I really hope to try and make it different this time.

My hope is to make timely updates, a few a week, as part of my new promise to be more professional with my blogging. I have come to understand that, in order to become a better tech blogger, I have to practice blogging. My new goal is make it part of a routine, setting aside a number of hours a week to focus on blogging for all my projects, both paying and personal.

I won't try and define Truffle Ramen for you other than b its soon-to-be prominent tagline 'Broke Foodie Adventures.' I am going to provide my insight as a poor college kid who happens to have a passion for the world of fine dining and gourmet cooking. I will share recipes, food adventures in my town, and even tips and links on picking the best of the foods you have avaliable.

I feel its only fair to warn you that, as a nutrition student, I have a unique outlook on foods. I am coming to the realization that the key to living a long adn healthy life comes from paying attention to what I put in my body. Don't expect to see pictures of cheeseburgers all the time here. However, you should keep in mind that I do eat on campus on a fairly regular basis, and I will write about that as well.

Stay tuned for more from the foodie part of my brain with Truffle Ramen @ Tony's Brain.
